Balancing Innovation, Risk and Reputation in the AI Era
The launch of ChatGPT on 30th November 2022 heralded the mainstream arrival of what is, thus far at least, most dynamic, fast-changing and accessible technological advancement of our lifetime. In a breathtakingly short space of time, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed the way we live our lives and go about our business, and it already feels strange to imagine the world prior to its existence.
In late 2024, Forbes Advisor reported that around 65 percent of businesses believed AI tools would play an increasingly significant role in their future business operations by optimising their productivity. However, smart users also understand that a disclaimer applies: caveat usor (‘let the user beware’).
Sayso director, Rebecca Reid, has taken the lead on our own AI journey. She says a comprehensive AI policy is crucial for any business seeking to operate within the rapidly-evolving landscape of the AI era. Here’s why:
Ethical and responsible AI use
Your AI policy should be structured to ensure that your business and its people will operate ethically and responsibly with regards to AI technologies. It should have considerations that prevent the use of AI for malicious purposes, and it should safeguard the data privacy rights of customers and staff.
Risk Management
A well-designed AI policy should help to identify and mitigate some of the potential risks associated with the use of AI technology, minimising any potential negative impact and ensuring a level of accountability if things go wrong. It also clearly indicates the intention of your business use to customers, stakeholders and staff, and covers risks related to bias in AI, data security breaches, and legal and regulatory compliance (or lack thereof).
Maintaining Trust and Reputation
You have invested significantly into building and maintaining trust with your customers, employees and other stakeholders. A sound AI policy, which is transparent about how AI is used within your organisation, will demonstrate an intentional commitment to using this technology responsibly and ethically. This further enhances your brand reputation, ultimately leading to stronger relationships and better business outcomes.
Several of our clients have sought our guidance on how to safeguard their brand reputation amidst the evolving AI landscape. We have developed a webinar-based client training programme which delves into the ethical considerations and potential risks associated with integrating AI. This course is not a ‘how-to’ guide for using ChatGPT, Gemini or Synthesia, but instead focuses on the importance of creating and implementing best practice guidelines. We approach AI from a communications and risk management perspective, recognising that these digital technologies are here to stay but must be implemented thoughtfully.

“I had the pleasure of recently attending a standout presentation covering the Business Identity, Integrity and Image in the AI Landscape. The informative session provided valuable insights and while thought provoking, raised questions of our own company’s readiness to embrace this technology. Thank you!”
